To answer this question, one must first ask what I am being saved from?
In Romans chapter one, the scripture reminds us that two things are revealed from heaven.
The righteousness of God and the wrath of God.
As such, mankind is either under one or the other, but not both.
As God’s creation, we are either under his righteousness found in Christ or a candidate for his wrath, which ends in spending eternity in torment and darkness outside of His presence.
The scripture makes it clear that God is a holy God. As such, He cannot look upon sin nor fellowship with sinners.
This is an issue because the bible also tells us in Romans 3:10 that there is none righteous, no not one. And again in Psalm 51:5 that we were all born in sin and shaped in iniquity.
When Adam ate that fruit, the consequences were far-reaching, and this is a lesson in itself.
So from birth, we are sinners incapable of knowing God. And if we die in this state, we will spend eternity in hell.
However, God, in His love, grace, mercy, and kindness, made a way for us to be reconciled with Him. So that we don’t have to suffer through this life without knowing him, nor spend eternity outside of His presence.
How did He do it? It took death. Death has always been God’s requirement for sin. Even in the Old Testament, the high Priest would sacrifice animals for the people’s sins.
“For the wages of sin is death,” Romans 6:23, and without shedding of blood, there’s no remission for sin. Hebrews 9:22
Arguably the most famous bible verse is John 3:16, for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
The Apostle Paul puts it another way in Romans chapter 5 verse 8, God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died in our place.”
So how can one be saved? Believe that you are a sinner alienated from the life of God, having no hope.
Then believe that God sent His Son into the world to die for our sins and was satisfied when He raised Him from the dead.
If you believe that God imputes Christ's righteousness on you, so He no longer sees you as a sinner, but as a child and joint heir with Christ.
In other words, for he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21
This is how someone can be saved from the wrath of God and the kingdom of darkness into the righteousness of God and the kingdom of light.
